What good pastoral care looks like
Don’t judge it by warm language on a website. Look for clear systems and fast follow-through.
- Clear safeguarding systems (roles, reporting routes, training, consistency)
- Strong tutor / house structure so every child is “owned” by a small team of adults
- Responsive communication that is predictable and professional, not vague or reactive
- A behaviour policy that protects learning (clear boundaries, fair consequences, calm classrooms)
Green flags (what you want to hear)
- Specific roles: “Your child’s first contact is the tutor; the head of year steps in within 24–48 hours if needed.”
- Clear process: “Here’s the reporting route, here’s who follows up, here’s how we document it.”
- Consistency: “This is how we do it every time,” not “it depends who you speak to.”
Quiet red flags (what to watch for)
- Vague language: lots of warmth, few details.
- Unclear ownership: “Any teacher can help” (sounds nice, often means no-one is responsible).
- Slow follow-up: “We try our best” without a timeline.
Questions to ask on an open day
These questions cut through marketing and reveal the real culture:

- “How do you help new joiners settle socially?” (buddy systems, tutor check-ins, clubs, house routines)
- “What’s the typical response time if a parent emails with a concern?” (expectations matter)
- “How do you balance high standards with wellbeing?” (listen for how they prevent overload)

Create a simple checklist and score each school from 1–5 on:
- Support: do they have a clear system and people who know your child?
- Communication: are updates predictable, responsive, and clear?
- Culture fit: would your child feel safe, motivated, and able to belong?
